Family Fun Month: Fun Activities To Do With Your Family

For many families, turning the calendar to August starts to bring closure to their summer activities and while many families are looking for a last minute vacation escape, some are looking to extend their family fun. After all, August is family fun month and for good reason: the last days of warm (or hot) weather are on the horizon and school is on the verge of being in session.

With that said, here are some fun family ideas to round out your summer.

1. Have an Outdoor Picnic

For many families, Memorial Day and Independence Day is the crux of the outdoor cookout and picnic scene; however, you don’t have to wait for major holidays to enjoy cooking and eating with your family. Gather up some grub, get some charcoal, and throw out a blanket for the perfect summer family meal.

2. Go Camping

If you’re looking for some outdoor adventure and a little R & R without busting the family budget, consider a camping trip to a local state or national park. Entry fees and overnight camping spots are generally inexpensive, and if you have or can borrow some gear, camping can make a great outdoor getaway away from all of the daily noise.

3. Take a Hike

Along those lines, consider just spending a day at a local park and explore some of the terrain. Hiking is great exercise, exposes you and your family to local landmarks, and helps build those coveted familial bonds. Take some snacks, pack a lunch, hop in the car and go off for some adventure.

4. Head to the Drive In

Many Americans remember the days of yon where drive in movies were the norm and being outside watching a flick on the big screen was the only way to go. Unfortunately, the drive ins of yesteryear have all but vanished from popular culture, but many still remain and some are only a short drive away. Give your family the experience of an outdoor movie at a local drive in theater.

5. Play Disc Golf

One of the growing trends in many communities is disc golf. Essentially the same principals as regular golf but played with Frisbee-like discs, disc golf gets your family out of the house and onto the green grass of a local disc golf course. Generally centered around a city park, disc golf courses offer a great deal of fun and a challenge that everyone can enjoy.

6. Hit a Driving Range

From disc golf to real golf, consider taking your family to a local driving range. Many larger cities have lighted driving ranges where you can take advantage of the cooler evenings and most offer golf club rental services. A bucket of range balls is inexpensive and can last for hours.

7. Plant a Garden

While many parts of the country are less than desirable for gardening in August, many parts are perfect for preparing Fall gardens. August is the perfect time to sow seeds for fall gardens, and preparing a garden bed is a great family activity that can last a few hours to a few days depending on how you go about it. Start now and watch your garden grow.

8. Visit an Amusement Park

August usually marks the proverbial doldrums of summer, and most retailers are looking for any way to get folks in the doors. This goes for amusement parks as well: virtually all amusement parks are running specials in August for discounted or free admissions, so take advantage of the inexpensive prices for a day of great family fun.
