A Guide To Properly Hanging Your American Flag

You may be wondering how to hang your American Flag proudly at your home, we have a guide to assist you!

Understanding how citizens should behave around the Stars and Stripes is a big deal as the flag has been an emblem of our country’s identity as a nation for more than 200 years. So, when gathered around the flag you are asked to stand at attention and salute when the flag is passing in a parade or being hoisted or lowered in front of a crowd.

  • The flag shouldn’t be displayed or kept out in inclement weather.
  • It is correct to display the flag from sunrise to sunset on flagstaffs in the open, but it may be displayed at night if it is illuminated.
  • When the flag is hung on a wall, window, or door, the blue section of the flag (the Union) should be to the observer’s left.
  • When the flag is hung either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the Union should be to the observer’s left.
  • When the flag is at half-staff, the flag should be first hoisted to the peak for a moment and then lowered to the half-staff position. Once you’re ready to lower for the day bring it back to the top and then lowered again.
  • The flag should not be displayed on a float unless from a staff, nor across the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle.
  • In the US, no other flag should be flown above the American flag, if they are at eye-level the other should be placed to the right of the American flag.
  • The flag should be at the center and highest point when displayed with state flags.
  • The flag should never be displayed with the stars down, as that signifies distress.
  • The flag shouldn’t touch anything beneath it.
  • The flag should never be fastened, displayed or stored away in a manner that it could get damaged or ripped.
  • The flag should not cover a ceiling.
  • The flag shouldn’t have anything placed on it.
  • The flag should not be used for advertising purposes or placed on cushions, handkerchiefs or costumes.
